Field collection, lab data and gene bank records unified into one cloud platform, replacing paper forms and scattered spreadsheets.
The Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB), part of ICFRE, is responsible for managing Forest Genetic Resources (FGR) — the heritable material collected, documented and analysed for its economic, scientific and societal value. That work ran on manual processes: field data captured on paper forms, spread across multiple platforms and varying formats, with no single system tying collection through to lab analysis.
Kultivate built an integrated platform — an Android tablet application for the field and a web portal for management — covering the full FGR workflow. Field teams use an offline-capable app with GPS tagging to record field data, tree data and seed/fruit trait data as text, photos and geo-location, with access to species literature and conservation strategies on the same device. Behind it, a cloud-hosted PostgreSQL system (Django backend, Angular web portal, Flutter mobile app) holds five linked databases — field collection, tree data, seed/fruit trait data, seed gene bank data and field gene data — secured with HTTPS/TLS/SSL and role-based access across platform admins, institution admins, field data associates, lab data supervisors and senior scientists. A query module, automated report scheduling, an analytics dashboard and connections to image analysers and X-ray machines support the lab side of the work.
Genetic resource conservation that once depended on paper forms and disconnected records across research stations now runs on one secure, queryable system — from field collection through storage, analysis and reporting.
